 +So this is a bit of a hidden trick, and YMMV, but you can make a psuedo-soldermask with Kapton using the ProtoLaser. This works better for larger-pad surface-mounted components when you need a plane on the component-side of the board, and helps to avoid solder and solder-paste from wicking between the pad and the plane. ​

 +  - Fabricate the board entirely, but do not remove it from the substrate (i.e. after routing, do not twist/cut the board out). **It is highly advised to select four tabs when creating the ProtoMat'​s toolpath at the beginning if you're considering following this masking process.**
 +  - Find the widest Kapton tape roll you can. You want as few overlapping strips as possible.
 +  - Carefully lay a single strip of Kapton tape over your design. It should be as tight as possible, with **no** (zero) bubbles underneath, and as straight as possible. It can go beyond the edge of your board as well if needed, though that will just be waste, so try to limit that.
